With everything going on in the world, life is pretty intense right now for most of us, so it’s no surprise that many people are having trouble falling, and staying, asleep. But chronic insomnia can become a serious problem, affecting everything from our memory to our aging, to our immune systems.
And, it’s a fact that untreated Candida yeast overgrowth can be one of the causes of sleep disruptions.
How does Candida overgrowth affect sleep?
Fungal Candida is a living organism. And, this fungal Candida becomes particularly active at night.
When you have a Candida overgrowth situation, the body reacts by creating inflammation to get rid of that excess. Inflammation raises cortisol levels and cortisol is the stimulating “fight or flight” hormone. This is NOT something you want your body flooded with when you are trying to go to sleep!
Another side effect of cortisol is that it lowers melatonin levels (melatonin is the hormone that regulates your sleep/wake cycle). Please see below for a special offer that can help boost your melatonin when you need it.
Fungal Candida and Insomnia Can Effect Your Liver
Another problem with Candida overgrowth and insomnia is fungal Candida’s effect on the liver. According to John E. Humiston, MD, a family practice physician who has treated many cases of Candida overgrowth, the first major organ invaded by out-of-control Candida is the liver.
“After months to years of continuing invasion into deeper tissues, Candida causes the liver to malfunction, either through direct poisoning or through interruption of the liver’s normal processes,” say Humiston. “The result is excess levels of toxin (normal metabolites that should have been cleared out and/or direct toxins produced by Candida itself) in the bloodstream, especially evident between 1 and 3 am when it appears the liver goes through a natural nightly change.”
These toxins irritate the nervous system, he says, which can trigger anxiety, a racing heart, and a racing mind that won’t “turn off.”
Then, if you add to that the frequent bloating, indigestion, itching, headaches, joint pain and other discomforts associated with Candida overgrowth, you have all the ingredients of a sleepless night.
The good news is that our “One-Two Punch” can halt Candida overgrowth symptoms in their tracks, keep them under control, and help you get better sleep.
