How to Get Back to a Balanced Microbiome
Oh, no—I have Candida!
Of course, you do, because we all have Candida (C. albicans); it is an important part of the gut microbiome. And what is the gut microbiome? It is the microbial “community” of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live in your intestines. (By the way, we have unique microbiomes all over our bodies: our skin has its microbiome, as do our mucus membranes!).
It may sound gross, but these tiny critters are there for a reason: a balanced gut microbiome helps us resist pathogens and makes our immune system more efficient. And most importantly, there is a particular interplay between our healthy gut bacteria and our healthy gut fungus.
So what is the problem with Candida?
In an ideal case, bacteria and fungi work together in the gut in perfect balance—and they need each other to function at their best. Outside forces, such as antibiotics, steroids, or excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates, can disrupt this finely tuned system and lead to a fungal overgrowth, sometimes referred to as “Fungal Dysbiosis.”
This overgrowth upsets the balance of positive bacteria, and in many cases, causes Candida fungus to grow legs, or filaments, pierce the gut wall, and migrate to other parts of the body, causing a host of problems, including:
Fatigue
“Brain fog" making it hard to focus or think straight.
Oral thrush (a white film on the tongue or in the mouth)
Abdominal pain, bloating, and indigestion
Increasing allergies to foods (gluten or celiac problems can be a direct result of Candida overgrowth.
Constant craving for something sweet!
Joint pain with arthritis-like symptoms
Chronic sinus drainage, which antibiotics don't help!
Weight gain (or loss) and the inability to change it.
Fungus on the toenails
Itching, red eyes
Ear drainage
Skin rashes and/or itching
Do you experience any of these symptoms? There is hope!
According to an article in the National Library of Medicine:
“Bacteria often secrete peptides and/or toxins that can act on nearby cells. Enterococcus faecalis, a Gram-positive, commensal bacterium inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract of humans, produces a 170-amino-acid prepropeptide which is processed by several enzymes to generate and secrete an active 68-amino-acid peptide known as EntV.49 The secreted peptide has been shown to inhibit the formation of C. albicans filaments (Figure 1b), preventing biofilm formation.”
Global Health Trax “ThreeLac™” contains three strains of probiotic (beneficial bacteria), including Enterococcus faecalis, that are targeted at reigning in this rogue Candida and bringing your microbiome back into balance. Used in conjunction with Candisolv™, an enzyme product used to dissolve the hard cell wall of the fungal Candida yeast cells, we can help you bring your gut—and your world—back into balance.
