Candida Treatments That Help "Weed" Out Pesky Candida Overgrowth

Many people are surprised to learn that they have Candida—because we ALL have Candida!

Under normal circumstances, the small amount of Candida albicans yeast that resides in our gut is not a problem. In fact, it is part of a healthy microbiome!

Why or When is Candida a Problem?

To illustrate how Candida can become a problem, I will introduce you to a bit of greenery, one that resides in my yard, and possibly in many of yours: cleavers. Cleavers, also known as goosegrass or bedstraw, is a common plant (some would say “weed”) that grows in environments worldwide. It has long been used in traditional native herbal medicine for its positive effect on kidney and urinary tract health, on the lymphatic system, and on the liver.

(If you are interested in herbal medicine, there are many good books and websites out there. Please read up on anything you plan to use, both to make sure that you have the right plant and to be aware of possible contraindications and toxin levels.)

Cleavers can be very useful! Except that, under certain circumstances, cleavers propagates like mad, overgrowing and choking out other plants, and generally taking over.

At left is a picture of the cleavers in the wooded part of our yard attempting to crowd out my Aegopodium (Snow-on-the-Mountain)—and doing a pretty good job.

Much like cleavers and other invasive plants, once Candida is provided the right conditions, it can develop into its aggressive fungal form. Then it overgrows the “good” bacteria and yeasts in the "garden" of your gut.

As you know if you have experienced it, this can create all sorts of issues.
